60-70 liters is huge. You definitely won’t want to carry it on a shoulder strap. Hiking with a 60 liter duffel is a strong no.

Check the carry on weight limits for all your airlines. 7kg limits are common. I recommend the Patagonia Black Hole 32.

If you are open to regular travel backpacks with clamshell opening, I'd recommend Tortuga Super lite. It's 40L and should be all the room you need if you don't over pack.

I’m not planning on backpacking in the traditional sense, but we’ll still be moving around quite a bit within the country and doing some fairly long journeys. Rather than dragging a suitcase around, I’m looking for a travel bag that can be used as a backpack, carried with a shoulder strap, and potentially used for hiking later on. The TNF Base Camp Duffel bags look pretty good, and I also like the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel, which seems quite water-resistant — something I’m looking for. However, I can’t seem to find one with an easily accessible external pocket for things like documents, a water bottle, etc. What would you recommend? Since I’m going for 3 weeks, I was thinking around 60–70L.
