Question for Hiking Parents 🥾🧒

I would really appreciate some hiking/outdoorsy parents’ opinions. I am looking to buy my best friend, who is having her first child, a present before bub arrives. I want the present(s) to feel practical and thoughtful. She loves short hikes, enjoys going for bush walks and doing outdoor activities regularly. I am wondering what products any of you have enjoyed using, anything hiking/walking carrying children related. I have seen the hiking backpack type baby carriers and they look great, but I’m clueless if they are a bit overkill for a 1-2hr hike. I also chose this theme of present as I know she wouldn’t buy it for herself. But also she wants to not loose herself and her hobbies after the baby arrives and as she has more children later on. Happy to spend a higher amount if the item is worth it. Thank you in advance for any advice and opinions !!

not overkill for 1-2hrs, the hip transfer on those carriers makes a real difference once the kid gets heavier

Something to think about... becoming a mom is great and all, but we lose our identity. We stop being me and become bub's mom. Get her something just for her. Maybe go with her to an outfitter and get her a new pair of hiking shoes. She wont fit in prepregnant shoes. Give the baby carry backpack to her partner... she's already carried bub enough.

crazy creek long back hex

They have compact ground pads that are smaller than a sleeping pad but longer than a sit pad. They’re good for changing a baby on a hike. Or you can get her a crazy creek and tell her if you unclip and lay it flat it’s a changing pad. The crazy creek long back hex is good for changing even bigger longer babies as they age.

I took my 3 month old on a short hike, and had a special back carrier (with head support) for that. Felt she was a lot safer on my back than my front if I were to fall. And had way better view of where I was placing my feet when she was on my back. Maybe give her a gift card for it? Or offer to go shopping with her. I did a lot of research, and tried different models, before I decided on which to get.

For that long of a hike (which depending on the baby’s age can be a lot!) a carrier backpack is the way to go. If the baby is old enough and has trunk control that is. So she would t be able to use it until baby is older. And honestly, we only just started doing longer hikes with my son and he’s 13 months. Think our first long one was when he was 10 months. Mine replaced my pack since it’s got storage, even an insulated compartment. It’s a Kelty, though I know Osprey are popular. Sunshade is a plus. Overall, she wont probably be using it for a year, so if she wants to do smaller jaunts here and there (trust, becoming a mom stuff like hikes can be daunting because of naps, feeding, diaper schedules) a structured carrier is the way to go. One with a hip seat and approved to front carry eventually would be good.
