where is it actually worth spending money on backpacking gear?

i’ve been dayhiking around bellevue for years, but this summer i’m finally doing my first proper multiday trip i knew backpacking gear was expensive, but seeing the total in my rei cart is a different story lol. i’m trying to figure out where it’s actually worth paying more and where the cheap stuff is perfectly fine. the sleeping pad is the one i keep going back and forth on. there’s a $40 amazon one with thousands of reviews, and then there are $200 pads that weigh about half as much. i’m already pretty aware of my knees after a long day with a light pack, so saving weight sounds great, but not if it means spending way more than i need to for those who’ve been doing this for a while, what did you buy cheap and end up being completely happy with? and what piece of gear did you try to save money on and immediately regret? also, trekking poles. i’ve never bothered with them on dayhikes, but i’m starting to wonder if they’re actually worth bringing on a multiday trip, especially for knees. trying to spend money where it matters and not just buy the expensive version of everything because it has a lighter number on the label

Don’t skimp on your sleeping set up. Spend what you reasonably can for comfort, warmth, and weight. You can find decent tents and pot/stoves on Amazon that can get you by. Small things like sporks and trowels you can get on amazon and save some money as well. For your pack, get what fits your body best. It will thank you on trail. Trekking poles are great. Costco will occasionally sell their carbon fiber cascade brand ones for ~$30. Even the cheap ones on Amazon will work fine if you don’t already have a set.

Yeah, second this, the sleeping system is the most important thing to splurge on.

Yup. You spend 8 hours lying down. Your hips will be used all day, treat them to comfort at night. This is a killer for most. Bring a thermal coat to sleep in. Walking around at 1 am in the city is completely different to sleeping on a trail at 1 am. A pack-away thermal layer just for evenings is worth its space and weight.

Facebook Marketplace but you have to do your research. At the same time, REI is a great place to buy shoes, sleeping bags, etc. Wait for a 20% off sale to purchase. If you buy cheap gear, you’ll probably end up buying it again sooner than later. At the same time, if there’s a chance you’ll backpack a couple times and give it up, a $40 sleeping pad will be less of a loss.

But once cry once. I second REI because they sell quality items from companies that stand by their products. And if something isn’t what you expected the return policy is top tier. Adding to that your membership points build up over the year and that has allowed me to explore even more outdoor hobbies.

The 1 year return policy is just insane to me

Where I spent good money: tent, sleep pad, shoes, pack. Where I spent medium money: socks, quilt, base layers. Where I went cheap: stove, cookware, pillow, sit pad, trekking poles. Also my clothes are mismatched because most of them were bought on clearance.

You definitely want a high fill power down bag/quilt, and there's almost no way to save on that except hoping for a sale. That's a good investment.
