Backpacking shoes

Hello everyone, I’ve been backpacking now for a couple years and started with some Merrell boots and last year I bought some keen hiking boots that are very comfortable though heavy and don’t dry. Long story short I’m upgrading a lot of my gear and was in between some different shoes and wanted to get more experienced hikers opinions. Specifically I was looking at these 3 Hoka speed goats (non waterproof version ) Hoka Stinson 8 Topo athletic shoes Anyone have any recommendations or reviews on any of these?

Virtually all thru-hikers wear ventilated trail runners. I switched to them years ago and they've been fine in the Sierra, on a long Scout trek at Philmont, etc. Fit is everything. Don't choose brands, try on shoes. Keep trying them on until you find a pair that feels great. Brooks Cascadia feel like they were made for me, so that is what I wear. One note, some shoes are "zero drop", like Altra. If you choose those, you'll need to slowly adjust to them.

+1 for the Brooks Cascadia. Combine them with Injini liners and Darn Tough sock and you are set.

https://preview.redd.it/jbat8z39ebsh1.jpeg?width=3843&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10ba7e39870a198fb5f111d3d4dc946aaee0056f

I stopped wearing liner socks 30+ years ago when merino wool socks became available. They were essential when we had short fiber "ragg" wool socks and leather boots that took ages to break in, but have not been needed for a very long time now. The modern (last 20 years) approach is pre-walk/race taping and lightweight merino socks. Iniji socks work as an easier alternative to taping for some people. See the book Fixing Your Feet for all the up-to-date info. I had some thin nylon Gold Toe socks and some silk liner socks, but I think I threw them away in the previous century. Here is a photo from when I wore liner socks. I'm the kid. https://preview.redd.it/jbat8z39ebsh1.jpeg?width=3843&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10ba7e39870a198fb5f111d3d4dc946aaee0056f

Second for Brooks Cascadia, just got back from an Autumn Trek at Philmont with mine and they were great. I think the reality is you will have to try a few pairs on to see what does you best. My first trail runners were New Balance. Nothing wrong with the build of the shoe but it wasn’t quite right for one of my hips. The cascadia cleared that up. You might find that cascasidia is ok but Hoka is better for you. That’s all ok.

I love Altras. Did the Portugues route of the Camino de Santiago with my back pack. No blisters nor the start of any. The zero drop does take a bit to get used to even though we were born zero drop.

When I first got altras and hiked a lot in them I developed pain in my right Achilles to the point I had to put cushier, non zero drop insoles in. Love the wide toe box though. Point being—glad it worked out for you and I’d be hesitant to recommend someone switch before a big trip

It is weird. I was tried them out for a couple of months and got them for the wide toe bed. Had no idea why I had no soreness walking that many days straight. My orthopedist explained it to me later and his explanation did make sense as to why zero drop worked. I’m just relaying what he said. The Achilles tendon and the calf do not flex the entire way with the small amount of cushion in an athletic shoe, which makes them not be zero drop, but makes then feel good. After a few days of hiking, that small amount of cushion tightens the Achilles tendon and the calf because neither has been fully stretched with each step while the zero drop fully flexes them. Being a woman that has worn heels, the calf tightening happens within a few hours. You definitely would need to break yourself into Altras rather than you breaking in them. It is stretching the Achilles tendon the entire way. My Achilles hurt when I first walked in them. I’d walk in them for thirty minutes until it got better. Once I had broken myself into the Altras, they were awesome.

I have wide feet, so Hokas don’t work for me. They apparently don’t believe in anything wider than a B width. The Topos are what I wear. Excellent durability and a wide toe box that’s actually built like your feet. Good variability for the drop and stack height you prefer as well. I do best in the Mountain Racers myself.
