Thrifted 30°F Kids Bag for Reno Fall: Warm Enough for a Cold Sleeper Under $50?

My 7 year old wants her own sleeping bag this fall. I keep looking at kids options and they all feel heavy or too thin. I found a 30 degree thrift bag that weighs less than a pound but I'm not sure if that is enough for Reno nights even with extra layers. She runs cold at home so I worry about pushing it. We have a zip-together pad and I was thinking of giving her the bottom layer so she stays warmer without extra bulk. The thrift bag has no hood so I might need to add a liner or beanie. If you have used thrift gear for kids what worked without buying new? I'm trying to keep it under fifty bucks total.

For a cold sleeper in Reno fall, 30F with no hood is asking for a rough night. Those temps can dip lower than you'd think, especially in the early morning. The pad layer idea is smart, most heat loss is conduction anyway. A fleece beanie and a cheap liner would help a ton, you could probably find both at the same thrift store for like ten bucks. I'd test it in the backyard first if you can, better to bail at 2am than on a trail.

backyard test is a good call. i was planning to just risk it but that's dumb when I have a perfectly good yard to try it in first the thrift store suggestion is where I feel a little silly for not thinking of it myself. I work at a coffee shop and thrift shop out of habit, so tracking down a beanie and liner should be easy. ten bucks sounds about right too

Are you backpacking in and have yo carry your supplies? If no, you’re driving to a campsite, that bag is fine bc you can also bring all your warmest blankets from home. Seeing as you thrift keep an eye out for wool blankets (real wool fro a sheep) as the warmest products for cold weather are wool, down, and fur. Usually $12 or less for a blanket and if it’s rough and itchy you can layer it under/between sheets or synthetic blankets. However you’re camping a warm hat is a great option for nighttime along with loose wool socks and thermal long underwear (base layer) as pjs. The Reno area in fall could be either just like late summer or cold like winter. So be prepared and if the weather is awful consider just bailing P.s. I am not a child but I need a 0 degree down quilt for any kind of cold night and sometimes I even layer it with a summer quilt and, my poor cold ass, a wool blanket Oh and yes a sleeping pad is just as important as your back/quilt so all of it together: tent/shelter, pad, bag/quilt and finally PJs make up a sleep system There’s other tricks like hot water bottles, sleeping WITH your child etc that you should utilize too

wool blankets are a good call. we already keep a couple in the car for emergencies. fall in Reno can shift fast, so we are bringing layers and a backup plan if it gets too cold

Definitely not, no. Even with a sleeping pad (required all the time, no matter the temperature), she will still be cold. Extra blankets are heavy and you mentioned the weight. The lack of hood is tough too. Keep looking, especially at yard sales.

good call on the sleeping pad, I hadn't thought of that. yard sale season is basically here in Reno, so I'll keep an eye out. might check the REI garage sale too if I can swing the timing with my shift

I don't think you have them there, but I got a really nice sleeping pad new for like 60 bucks at Bi-Mart. REI is expensive, even the used stuff.

BiMart is solid for basics. I keep meaning to check ours for camp gear but the parking lot always scares me off.
