Coleman

Raining inside my tent - gear issue or skill issue?

So I fly camp once or twice a year, usually in the fall for a long weekend. This year it was on Fox Island, about 20 miles south of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. Last year I procured a Coleman Carlsbad 6 person darkroom tent with porch, and while it's fine in the sense of being a weather-durable tent and not letting bugs in, it condensed water into the tent constantly, even with all the windows open. Weather was high in the low 70s, lows in the mid-40s to lower 50s, not overly humid, but the lows got below the dewpoint. My question is, is my gear bad, or is there something I can do to mitigate waking up to my tent, air mattress, and sleeping bag becoming an impromptu water collector? Any recommendations for a tent? I also might have a Crua Duo Maxx I could switch to if it's a better option.

How close to water do you camp? There are generally tent placements that are highly prone to causing condensation. Close to water, on grassy meadows, or near swampy areas are all going to yield a lot of moisture.

This was about 100ft above and within 700 feet of water. The whole island is a mile wide, so there really isn't a "don't camp near water" option.

100ft above is actually pretty good. Problems are more like "5 feet above, 10 feet away". What about the terrain itself - e.g. grass, the ground itself being damp, nearby moist areas?

Grass field, roughly 200x3000ft, surrounded by a birch/pine forest. No visible low-lying/damp areas or sources of water.

Grass field is likely to be it, night time prespiration from grass is surprisingly significant. Consider moving the tent under the birches / pines. That will reduce moisture coming from below you, and also reduce contrast from above (as trees provide some degree of warmth).

I'll give that a try for next time. I usually camp by the plane because there wasn't an option to camp near the woods at previous sites, but that would have been viable this time. Thanks!

Hopefully it works! I specifically know to avoid grassy setups despite their apparent coziness. Otherwise site selection gets weird. I typically use a single-wall tent in hike-in backcountry environments. The *driest* I have seen my tent was ... next a tarn, on top of a bluff, during a significant rainstorm. The key was largely that the tarn position resulted in fog never collecting (it would just roll off the bluff into the valley about 50 feet away), no perspiration from the ground (just a bunch of rocks and heather), and the rain brought windy conditions which also kept the temperatures a lot more consistent on surfaces. The wettest ... has always been on grass.

Ground sheet under the tent, but not sticking out such that it could possibly collect water helps with condensation. Extra layer against the ground water. Make sure every single guyline is fully staked out, to prevent rain fly or tent layers from contacting each other which affects ventillation and condensation. If I know it's going to rain or be damp, I would try to get my tent between 2 trees and put a tarp over it: https://www.westcoastpaddler.com/community/attachments/e1ffae80-7e38-4a64-99f4-35cb2dcd2380-jpeg.7592/ This way you can increase ventilation. Lastly a battery powered fan can help with dew point and condensation from inside the tent. A Ryobi, Dewalt or some tool fan can run all night on a common tool battery.
