Pack sizing

would it work to buy something like the circuit SV? and just add a tent somewhere to the pack? Or is something of that size already cutting it too close and I should stick with a circuit or even a catalyst.

you should get a pack that fits the tent you like. Strapping gear to the outside of a pack is both annoying to walk with, more likely to lead to gear failure (i.e. from snagging on a tree), hard to keep the tent inner dry, and harder to pack.

u/Top_Contest1398

Since the 32L is full before food and clothes, I’d measure the whole load before picking another pack. Put it in a box with food for three nights and see how much space it takes up. Check whether the quoted pack volume includes the outside pockets, too.

You should be aware that packs don't always specify volume the same way. For example, some give internal volume and some give total estimated volume include front and side pockets.

That pack appears to be 37L internal with an estimated 48L total. Other brands might call that a 37L pack.

I’m building out a backpacking kit aimed at 2-3 night trips. I’m looking for capacity advice because UL seems to have the most capacity expertise. I’m aiming more for lightweight than ultralight, since I’m not through camping and my needs are not the same as most UL hikers My current base weight is 10 pounds without a tent (that includes an anticipated ULA circuit). Nice thing about my setup is I can add a true light tent and essentially have an ultra light setup. However, I plan to take my comfy tent, which is 5 pounds. A 15lb base weight is fine for me. My current pack is 32L and 3lbs. Since my load out is essentially ultralight, would it work to buy something like the circuit SV? and just add a tent somewhere to the pack? Or is something of that size already cutting it too close and I should stick with a circuit or even a catalyst. I don’t think I need to explain why I would like a smaller bag on the ultralight forum. It just seems more useful and more likely for me to use it for other things. A larger pack would be nice for packing the optional luxury item, or hauling my kids stuff in case they come camping. However, with a smaller pack, I don’t mind bringing a second bag to carry for a mile or two to a kids base camp, and I’ll probably have to take two trips anyways for water, so I’m not losing much sleep over kids gear

Advice about backpacks is very commonly discussed on this subreddit. You might be able to find what youre looking for by searching. If you want to proceed make sure your post includes at least the following: -area of use (be specific, i.e. "hiking in the southern Alps", NOT simply "Italy"), if theres multiple make a list -country and currency of purchase as well as available budget -packlist or at least your other big 3 (shelter, sleeping pad and sleeping bag) as well as duration of your outings so prospective helpers can estimate needed volume -special requirements that made you ask for your specific case Please also keep our mission statement in mind and remember that heavy framed bags, unless under exceptional circumstances, are beyond the scope of the forum and discussion specifically about such gear will be removed.

I'm afraid I'm a bit confused what your question is. My first read of this is that you have a 32L backpack in which you can already fit all your gear (a 15lb base weight, which includes a 5lb tent). But it seems you're asking if you should shift to a 48L or larger pack, but it's not clear to me what problems you currently face with the 32L pack. Is something not fitting in there? I imagine it would really help if you wrote out a gear list.

If you have a very clear use case for the pack like you do, you should get a pack that fits the tent you like. Strapping gear to the outside of a pack is both annoying to walk with, more likely to lead to gear failure (i.e. from snagging on a tree), hard to keep the tent inner dry, and harder to pack. That being said I can't imagine what a 5lb tent can do that a 2.5lb can't assuming a 3 season tent, and for a very modest sacrifice in function the 1.5lb tents these days are very impressive. Unless you are in the 5+ liter water carry range on your trips I'd recommend getting either a Gossamer Gear the two or a Durston Xmid depending on budget and a Gossamer Gear Murmur or Kumo (again depending on budget) and enjoy your life in the outdoors.

Thanks. For me, the challenging part is finding a pack that will fit everything, but is not larger than needed. I essentially want the smallest pack possible that will hold all my gear and food. A few items that are temporary or only for rare hikes are no big deal; kids sleeping bag, bearcan… I can figure something out Regarding what I can do with a 5- pound tent that a 2.5 tent can’t do: I’m not sure if that question is rhetorical or not. The tent I am looking at is one I have always wanted for some weird reason, sleeps myself very comfortably with all my gear inside, as well as two kids, can withstand extreme weather. (I hate being worried about my tent when it storms), allows me to day hike with my poles, does not have condensation on the inside, it’s easy to set up, does not have tape on the seams, add 2 to 3 people can sit inside it. comfortably. Some of the items on my list could definitely be lighter; however, I do not want to compromise on shelter and water. I don’t plan on through hiking very much. I don’t mind carrying an extra 5 to 6 pounds twice on the 40 daytrip for less than 50% of the hiking distance. If I was putting in the distances, that most of the ultralight forum seems geared toward, I would definitely be shooting for a sub 11 to 10 pound base weight

You should be aware that packs don't always specify volume the same way. For example, some give internal volume and some give total estimated volume include front and side pockets. That pack appears to be 37L internal with an estimated 48L total. Other brands might call that a 37L pack. Personally, I would find that more than large enough for 2-3 nights of ordinary three season backpacking with a compact setup. In fact, it's probably similar to a 50L Arc Haul which also has about 37L internal. I don't see a problem carrying the weight, but I have no idea how bulky your gear is. That is a pretty heavy pack compared to competitors at 38oz, but I know it's popular and perhaps you have a specific reason to choose it, e.g. fit or durability. BTW, to be helpful, your lighterpack should include everything, like first aid kit, hygiene, repair/emergency kit, poop kit, etc. I find that things like sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, meds, FAK necessities (cordage, multitool, tape, meds, alcohol wipes, etc.), actually do have significant weight, but are often omitted from lighterpack calculations for some reason. Even your spade and TP should be included, IMO. So there may be some additional weight that you don't expect. But even another pound doesn't really change any of your major calculations because those things shouldn't be too bulky. Personally, I would get a smaller and lighter tent, in the 2 lb range, and also a lighter pack. But that's me. You can use the heavy tent for winter trips or mountaineering.

I have shifted into the UL or lightweight world this past year. My quiver of tents is pretty solid but I do prefer doublewall freestanding (or semi freestanding) tents and I have: Nemo Hornet Elite 2p tent at 27 oz, then have a 6 oz footprint, and use ~3 oz of tent stakes; Nemo Dragonfly 3p tent at 54 oz, with an 11 oz footprint, and 3 oz of tent stakes; Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 4p at 85 oz, with 12 oz footprint, and 3 oz of tent stakes. The Hornet and Dragonfly both pack down pretty well and I can fit into my 40L weekend pack. Which is a Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 40. I am not in love with the HMG SW 40 but 40L is enough for me and a 3 day pack even with a non-UL tent. I used the Hornet for myself; Dragonfly for me+son for backpacking or some bikecamping; Copper Spur for most bikecamping, car camping, or .5 mile hike w/ basecamp. The 4p tent makes it hard for me to fit my stuff in a 58L pack with my kids stuff; if I'm bringing the 3p tent with all my kids stuff (which doesn't pack down easily) I usually use my 58L pack. I do dream of some hikes with like a Plex Solo Pro 1P tent (13.2 oz) and no footprint and no bear can but I don't get out enough to justify that cost.
