Hi, this is my first post here. I was hoping you could help. My son is in Scouts and he is going on his first overnight hiking (10 miles.) I am worried about the temps and weight. He is 130 lbs and his pack weighed a bit over 21 pounds. He has an REI pack, but I’m not sure which one offhand. The problem is his sleeping bag.. It is absolutely huge and it’s 5.7 pounds. I’ve been looking for a lighter one, but honestly, I don’t know which one is great and since they’re so expensive, I don’t want to buy one and then have it not be exactly what we need. I’m also trying to find an ultralight tent. Does anybody have any recommendations? I was looking at the Durston X-Mid 1 Solid. Is there something else that would do better? We are not able to buy very expensive items but I do want him to have quality so I understand that it can’t be too economical. Affordability is very important. Would you recommend a pad as well? Anything else he might need? I used to be in Scouts but it’s been a long time and we never really went on a hike like this. I appreciate any advice.

    He will absolutely need a pad to stay warm. This is very important. That said, a Walmart foam camping mat will work just fine, albeit may not be tue most comfortable. For tents and sleeping bags keep an eye out on r/gear trade and r/u gear trade. You can find great deals on used equipment. The durston tents are excellent, pricy but some of the best on the market.

    Thank you for the advice. I was looking at those foam mats at Walmart as well. They seem pretty light. I think it was around .7 ounces.

    I'm not aware of any sleeping pads that are 0.7 ounces - maybe it was 7 ounces? Even my very thin (1/8") GG Thinlite is almost 3 ounces, and I don't think Walmart sells anything that thin unless it's a recent change. Their blue roll-up one is a nice starter option for $15ish but it weighs 11oz IIRC. What kind of temps is he going to be dealing with - that one might not be warm enough for camping on rock in winter, for example.

    Maybe I’m sleep deprived and hallucinating 😅 It was definitely more than .7oz! I know it was under a lb. I have no idea where .7 came from, lol

    我是Durston所有产品的绝对狂热粉丝，但是，如果那不在你的预算内，那么我向类似情况的朋友推荐的两个选择是二手Durston，或者Lanshan之一。那是我第一个X-Mid之前用的。

    I'm an absolutely monstrous fan of all things Durston, but yeah, if that's not in your budget, then the two options I recommend to friends in similar situation are either a used Durston, or one of the Lanshans. That's what I had just prior to my first X-Mid.

    Ok sever have suggested those so I am seriously considering the Lanshan at this point.
