Beginner casual hiking gear

Hello! I am a casual hiker who goes on day hikes. I wanted to get some recommendations on clothing as I plan to hike more frequently. I’ve checked out REI, but I’m still not sure about what to get. I plan to do a 5-6 hour hike up in the mountains and a 2-3 hour hike in canyon-like structures this winter. I would like to use this gear later on in the future as well. Ideally every item is within $100-$125.

I’m a serious hiker, backpacker, and trail running, and when it comes to clothing, there are only two things worth spending money on (in my opinion): shoes and a rain jacket. Although I guess shoes are technically not clothing. A good rain jacket is important to keep you dry in cold weather and/or when you stop — I don’t wear rain jackets in rain (unless it’s really pouring) in warmer weather because I sweat too much underneath. I like my REI-branded rain jacket (I think it cost around $100 on sale); it’s longer so it also covers my butt. Otherwise, I hike in the same shorts and leggings (depending on temperature) that I wear to yoga and the gym. I also wear the same sports bras, shirts, layers, etc. that I wear to the gym. Really no need to spend money on this, especially if you already have gym clothes. Just dress in layers for cold so you can add/remove clothing.

https://vintagedancer.com/1900s/1900-1910s-hiking-camping-sport-clothes-for-women/

Great advice. Sheesh, what people wear to work these days is often "activewear" and thus totally suited to hiking. Right down to accessories like the water bottle, GPS on the phone, maybe a smart watch, and some health food bars in the pocket. Hiking is just walking around outdoors. And most of us do that already. So not tons of special gear needed clothing wise. People used to hike in work clothes even decades and decades ago...although it was wool suits and bloomers and skirts. But it worked then too. https://vintagedancer.com/1900s/1900-1910s-hiking-camping-sport-clothes-for-women/

My most beloved hiking layer is a thin merino wool sweater I bought from J. Crew years ago to wear to work. It has seen better days but it has been on numerous week-long hikes with me and to the top of Kilimanjaro.

I’ve worried over getting the “best” rain jacket because I see so many reviews where they say they leak. I recently read that the purpose of a rain jacket isn’t necessarily to keep you dry, but to keep you warm. Best thing to consider OP is to not hike in cotton. It chafes when wet and can make you cold. Invest in synthetics and wool. Especially wool socks, even for warm weather hiking. I hike with a poncho in my pack and try to stick to sweat wicking and UPF rated clothing with wool socks. But I don’t hike in areas that see frequent rain.

Merino wool is good for base layers (I prefer synthetics partly because that’s just what I own and I refuse to spend extra money on hiking clothes). Obviously for something like a rain coat, you need waterproof synthetics.

Truthfully you don't need expensive gear to hike. I mostly wear Columbia clothing, because I like how it fits, it holds up reasonably well, and their prices are a little more budget-friendly. The REI house brand stuff is also good quality for the price. REI has good sales scattered through the year (their Anniversary sale in May and Labor Day sale are their biggest ones, but there are others). It's always worth it to spend money on good wool socks, though. People swear by Darn Tough, but there are lots of good brands out there (I like Farm To Feet myself). Wool base layers are also really nice to have, but synthetic ones are a reasonable substitute if wool isn't in the budget (check end-of-season sales for wool; I've gotten some screaming deals in the late winter/early spring). Other than that, anything that dries quickly and doesn't chafe is all you really need. In pants, I look for a decent nylon content for abrasion resistance, but even that is negotiable if I like the pocket situation and the price. My typical hiking outfit is a pair of long pants with a pocket on the thigh for my phone, a wool t-shirt, a thin sun hoodie, and in my backpack I also have an extra layer or two depending on the weather (usually an insulating layer like a fleece or puffy jacket and a hard shell for rain/wind). Wool socks and trail runners. You'll also probably want a hat, gloves when it's cold/windy, a buff or bandana. If you're hiking in mountains or rocky areas, I highly recommend trekking poles; they're not just for old people, I promise. In the end though it's just going to be some trial and error to see what you like.
