Return to backpacking, tent advice needed

Posting in this sub after discovering r/ultralight was neither the right place nor were they a friendly bunch. I'm trying to decide on a 1p tent. Last backpacking tent I had was a early 00s eureka 4p, you can imagine how much that weighed. My only other tent is a TNF Wawona 8, with porch add on for family car camping. I'm interested in getting back out there (Northern Cal/Central Cal). I have zero experience with non-freestanding tents, and they don't interest me. I could be talked into a semi-freestanding design. My current leaders are the tarptent moment dw and nemo dragonfly. Which is weird because they seem like very different tents. But they honestly fit my needs in their own way. I want a tent light/small enough to fit in my 40l pack (poles separate if needed) I want a double wall tent in case I camp along the coast here where rh is near 100% at night. As mentioned, free standing which I have experience in. The moment feels like the better option with the LI version about the same price but much lighter than the nemo. It also lets me play with semi-freestanding. On the other hand the nemo seems a bit more comfortable for someone who hasn't gone this minimal before, and the gear area in the vestibule looks pretty slick.

If condensation is likely to be an issue for you where you camp, I'm going to suggest going with a two-person tent. The slight weight penalty is, imo, offset by the fact that you aren't touching the sides of the tent all night (and you can bring your gear in with you). I don't have an opinion on either of the tents that you have listed, but I do think going with a freestanding double wall is a good choice, even if the ultralight crowd disagrees

This is the pro response. I’m an ultralight backpacker and— though I have no handle on the toothbrush and I wore the same 2 pants/3 shirts for 21 days on the JMT— the 2p tent is totally worth it for the extra couple oz. I like Big Agnes copper spur 2P for mellow backpacking. I have a mosquito net bivy net for ultralight running.

I am far from ultralight but I love my copper spur 2p as well! sturdy, easy to set up, and packs down small.

My only issue with it is that the screen can be fragile if you use it a lot— i like the screen patches from tenacious tape.

I'm pretty active over in UL, but I hadn't interacted with your post, so I decided to check how annoyed I should be with my brothers & sisters, who sometimes delve too deep. I found such unfriendly comments as "we want what's best for you" and gentle reminders that they have a duty to the forum, new UL hikers, and the Google algorithm to make only the lightest recommendations, with links to subs that didn't have such obligations... Such horrible people over there... It's like they should warn people. Sorry, the real reason I'm commenting is because someone should mention that single trekking pole pyramid(ish) tents are probably the best tents for dealing with condensation. The UL guys are so used to mentioning weight, they forget to mention the simple physics and geometry of their decision. Every surface is angled which draws water away. X domes, especially those with a spreader bar have a large, mostly flat surface at the top, which encourages larger drops to form, with a greater chance of dripping. Domes are perceived as less drippy because of where the inevitable drips happen, and yes, a drip to the face is a concern, but all the unacknowledged drips on gear is actually more concerning. Everyone who says they are prioritizating condensation/moisture management and interior space, should be told that those are conflicting requirements, before pointing out that 2 trekking pole tents, and single hoop tents are about equal seconds. All of these tent types exist in single/double wall versions. Though I think the community forgets what single wall meant when the "condensation is worse" advice was founded... Ya know, 20+ years ago before Zpacks style tents revolutionized that space (does anyone remember when we were calling them 1.5 wall tents)... I guess the brushing the walls concern still exists... I use shaped tarp so I haven't slept in a single wall very often.

Those are good points about how roof angles affect drip behavior. One additional thing though is how interior volume interacts with that. A very roomy 1 or 1+ tent with a crossbar and steeper sidewalls can have roughly double the interior volume of a small 1P pyramid, which means moisture inside the tent from breathing gets much more diluted and it's harder to bring the interior up to the dewpoint. Certainly it can still happen, but often you do get less condensation because the larger volume dilutes the moisture.

Yuuuup, I rock a 7.5 lb base weight and a 1+, 2p or 2p+ is where it's at. My 2p+ is awesome. Roomy even when I got someone along with me.

Yes, same. Just takes a couple days of bad weather to see why the extra room is completely worth the extra oz.
