Any input on these fuel transfer valves? $11-$57 is a big range

Seems like a simple thing; any reason I shouldn't get the $11 one? Any tips on use are most welcome. Should I cool the recipient to lower its pressure? Thanks! (btw these are in $CAD)

They're all basically the same as far as I can tell, though the $11 one looks like it may not have the purge valve the others have. I've had one that looks identical to the the $23.99 one for ~10 years and it works well. When transferring fuel it helps to cool the canister you're filling and warm the canister you're filling from, just sit it in some hot water or place it in the sun, obviously don't apply a flame to it lol. To minimize risk, make sure to do the transfer between canisters outside. To determine how full a canister is you can float it in some water and see how low it sits. Some brands have markings on the side that correspond to 25%, 50%, etc.

Awesome thanks. That one looks like a good middle-of-the-road type. Do you ever use the purge valve? I'm still not sure when it comes into play

I don't think the purge valve is particularly important. Even on the FlipFuel website they make no mention of it in their usage instructions. I think it's just for ensuring a used canister is completely empty before puncturing it for recycling. If you're looking to spend as little as possible I'd probably just get one from AliExpress instead, you'll get it even cheaper, you'll just have to wait for delivery from China (the $11 one is likely shipped from China anyway, based on that delivery date range).

If you can't see inside, or through, the canister, what use are side markings? A better way, that's usually accepted, is to weigh the canister being filled.

The lines on the can are compared to the water level when floating in water, not to the contents of the can. As a canister is filled with more fuel it will sit lower in the water, how low it sits will reflect how much fuel is in it. MSR canisters have a set of lines on the outside that indicate approximately how much fuel remains inside the canister. Here's an example: https://www.expocafeperu.com/w/2020/02/msr-fuel-canister-stove-msr-isopro-fuel-canister-msr-fuel-canister-diameter-msr-isopro-fuel-canister-burn-time.jpg Weighing them is ideal but not everyone carries a set of scales when camping. I often refill my mini canisters from a large one during a trip, or test how much is left in a canister mid-trip.

I've never come across canisters marked like this! I tend to buy whatever's in the shop, hopefully at a good price. I'm in the UK, so maybe we don't get MSR canisters in our outdoor shops. I'll look out for them. Thank you for the technique. Cheers.

You can also mark them yourself. Just do them at consistent measurements every ~6mm from the bottom to the top on all of your canisters that way you can tell which ones are the fullest and least full.
