Shakedown Request - JMT

Looking to do the JMT SOBO in ~16 days (13-14 days +1-2 zeros) next late July / early August. This is currently just what I OWN, that I find to be appropriate for the trip. I am aware there are still some things I likely need to change prior to then, most importantly a bear canister (would love suggestions as to which one). I also was looking at also adding an alpenglow fuel transfer so I can just pick up partially used canisters when available. Was contemplating needing the additional 5kmAh battery, another 10kmAh, or just 1 10mAh. I also own a 40 degree quilt but listed my 20 degree for the time being as I don't know the weather that far out for next season. I have a 900mL pot because I am going to be sharing it with the 1 other person I am going with. (I am aware I did not put my worn weight on my lighterpack). Open to any suggestions on gear to add or remove, thanks! Lighterpack: https://lighterpack.com/r/3h5dyg

Looking good already! Have so much fun on the JMT. It’s a great adventure. Here’s my first impressions of some easy weight savings: • ditch the CNOC and your current water bottles for two 1L Dasanis. Keep the Sawyer on one of them. I personally never wanted more than 2L capacity through the Sierra on the PCT anyway • would highly recommend a Bearikade weekender, which you can rent from Wild Ideas. I think they will give JMTers a discount? • One 10k is enough with judicious battery use. I am not that judicious and never had my (quite old) phone die • swapping the Petzl for a RovyVon will save you some grams. Caveat that it’s barely enough in lantern mode for a night summit of Whitney. • What’s the alcohol for? • You can bring way less soap and it’ll still be enough • do you need a food bag, since you’ve got a bear canister and framed pack? No need to ever unpack all food from the can • I bet you wouldn’t miss the sandals or sit pad much at all!! • an igneous bidet is a third of the weight and really good • how’s your tensor elite held up? I’m very curious about it for fastpacking reasons and would love to hear

my kit was pretty similar to yours for a july trip this summer. I think you'd be pretty fine with this loadout. I second the rec for renting a bearikade. they do a discount for JMT thrus - you just email them and ask for a code and they'll give you a discount if you're doing the JMT. what model you want is going to depend on how long you're looking at for your food carries. also, do your research in advance on how you plan to carry the bear can; JMT was my first time using one and I had to do a bit of messing around to get all my food in the can + figure out how to get it situated on my pack right. I think the fuel transfer valve is probably unnecessary kit. YMMV but I doubt you're going to want to fiddle with it. the cnoc bag is also probably unnecessary. you really don't need more than 2 liters at any point. I would go with the 20* quilt. I was there late july this year with an EE quilt and I was glad I had a 20* and not a 40*. The EE quilts are really very aggressively rated. for power, really depends on your resupply and your battery usage. going sobo, the hardest stretch for power is going to be MTR to whitney; there really aren't any recharge options during that stretch unless you zero in Independence. If you don't zero in independence, you can just have another battery in your resupply and carry the extra 8-10oz. Charging is pretty easy to find at Tuolomne/Reds/MTR/VVR. If you do zero in Independence, you probably can get by on a 10kmah battery, but you've got plenty of time to test between now and then to dial in. I don't see a PLB. Get one. The iPhone SOS is not reliable enough to be used in the backcountry, yet. SAR is very active in the Sierra. It's stupidlight not to carry some kind of dedicated SOS device. you might also consider a down puffy. depends on what the weather is like, but you can definitely get mornings down into the 30s, especially at elevation. if you want to cut weight, there are definitely places to do it - foam pad instead of the inflatable, water bottles, skip luxuries, switch to a tarp, etc. - but whether you want to is up to you. if you've never been out in the sierra, give yourself some leniency on your daily mileage, and take your training seriously. just about everyone i talked to who was doing it for the first time (except PCTers) was struck by how much harder it was than they'd thought. you've still got plenty of time obv. and have a ton of fun!

Before buying a second battery, do a three-day test using the exact settings you expect on trail: airplane mode, offline maps, photo use, and no opportunistic top-ups. Divide the observed drain by the number of days between resupply points and add a margin for cold weather and battery age. That will tell you whether one 10k bank is enough without carrying another bank based only on guesswork. For the bear canister, start with the current land-manager requirements and choose by the food volume needed for your longest carry, not just empty weight.

I also was looking at also adding an alpenglow fuel transfer so I can just pick up partially used canisters when available. No, entirely unnecessary. It won't even work if you don't have the needed temperature differential. Just buy a new can once. Was contemplating needing the additional 5kmAh battery, another 10kmAh, or just 1 10mAh A single 10 mAh is all you need. I also own a 40 degree quilt but listed my 20 degree for the time being as I don't know the weather that far out for next season. a 30F would be the best choice Onto your LP: Pack • You have been bamboozled with that pack liner. Sell it, get some money back, and use nylofume instead. About the same weight, works just as well, and about 40 times cheaper. • For the light load that you're carrying, you could get a way lighter pack. Yours is like twice the weight it needs to be. Frameless is a no-brainer Shelter • looks good Sleep System • IMO a 20F quilt is overkill for late July-early August. You could easily carry something that is closer to 16 oz than 25 oz. But maybe you're a cold sleeper, I dunno. • Ditch the pillow strap • Your sleeping pad is pretty glaring compared to the rest of your kit imo. Mid-summer, CCF is plenty. Chop it down to torso size. The pad that you're carrying is R 2.4, which is on par with all go-to CCF pads on the market. And yet it is heavier, and it comes with the huge liability of being able to completely fail at any time. To me, accepting that risk only makes sense at much higher R values where foam cannot compete, in terms of warmth-to-weight ratio. At R 2.4, accepting that risk (and paying $200 for it) makes no sense. If you haven't tried foam, you owe it to yourself. Cook System • An Evernew 900ml pot is half the weight of yours • ditch cannister stand, you won't ever need that Electronics • Your Kakwa has strap pockets. Ditch the phone zip pouch • replace the headlamp with a RovyVon A5 or Nitecore Tiki MedKit • ditch the carabiner • replace the space bear bag with a simple ziploc • ditch the swiss army knife; you'll never need that • you already have a mini bic in your cook kit; don't carry another • don't wrap luekotape around your lighter. It just becomes a sticky mess. Stick strips to wax paper • ditch the repair spool • what's the vaseline for? Bathroom Kit • Swap the space bears bag for a ziploc • sway the Duece 2 for a QiWiz Original • swap the CuloClean for any other bidet. The Litesmith Jetza is like 1/4 the weight. Or a DIY bottle cap bidet is like 2 grams Clothes • ditch the stuff sackl; you already have a backpack • did you seam seal your Leve jacket? And if so, was the weight updated? Self Care • Ditch the towel; you already have one in your cook kit • Why the mesh bag here? You already have little bags for both your med kit and your bathroom kit. You don't need a third Water • There is no reason to carry a heavy Thrubottle over a Smarwater bottle • ditch te Vecto; it's both heavy and fragile. Just use Smartwater bottles on both sides of the filter • I'd replace the Squeeze with a QuickDraw. Lighter and better. Food • You don't need that rehydrationbag; just eat uut of your pot Luxury • ditch the camp shoes. I'm not just saying this to be a gram-counting weenie. The Zpacks camp shoes are quite literally worse than having nothing at all. I carried a pair on the JMT, and it was a total waste. Even pinecones poke through the sole. • ditch the sit pad. Also, call it what it is. A full-length Thinlight isn't a sit pad, it's a sleeping pad protector. Which only further highlights the absurdity of your pad choice. Why pay a premium for a UL inflatable if it's so fragile and unreliable that you need to add 4 oz back in in th form of the Thinlight..? If you just sleep on a thicker CCF (like 6 panels of Switchback), then you get a luxury sit pad and and indestructible sleeping pad and you get to save weight overall and you can make your money back on the Tensor.

A quality 40F quilt works for me there; but that’s not the EE. Not withstanding the political baggage. I kept track of the lows over 35 nights the last three years from July into early September mostly camping above 10500’. Once it got down to 29F in Ionian, a little in the thirties, average 41F. 10k is 10 days of power, again personal experience. I only power phone and watch. My small mirrorless and the headlamp goes the distance easily. If this is a once in a lifetime trip rent a Bearikade. Otherwise buy one possibly on the used market. Totally worth it

Looking great. Only two things in addition (I think to above)…1. Why do you need a second USB C cable? Flextail 10k has a built in lanyard with c to c cable at the weight you list of 145gr (sorry translated for UK!). 2. I have an iPhone with case and it’s heavily. I bought an Honor 400 Lite which saves around 70-80 grams. It’s Android but actually flows like an iPhone. Simple to set up. Just get a physical SIM for the iPhone and switch it into the Honor before the trip. That was the lightest phone I could find that has a decent enough camera and isn’t silly money.

Kit is fine. Focus on reducing the 16 days food wt. It's by far the single heaviest and most likely likely voluminous item.
