I want to upgrade (not necesarily in price) to something not so big, comfortable on the back, that has lots of pockets to be able to organize my EDC equipment, able to carry a laptop safely (hopefully has padding to prevent damage), and sometimes medical equipment (EENT exploration equipment, Blood pressure cuff, oximeter, creams, meds, stethoscope, etc etc you get the idea), i say sometimes because i dont need the equipment everyday and its quite heavy.

Osprey proxima 30 is on sale for $82 on Osprey website right now. Lots of organization and I find their packs well made and very comfortable.

I can vouch for the Proxima 30's comfort and capacity. Has some great internal organization without being overly complicated, and different sections of the bag for different kinds of gear. Even when reasonably loaded out, was a breeze to have on my back.

Does the Proxima 30 count as personal item on flights and will it fit under the seat?

Technically it won’t fit most (although, different airlines have different dimension requirements so this is airline dependent). At 19” tall that exceeds the limit by 1-2”. In real life: it’ll fit under most seats (assuming you don’t pack it to the gills). It’ll be allowed on most airlines as a personal item because if it’s on your back, most airlines I’ve flown don’t really check.

• CTB20: Just awesome EDC, it would be perfect if it fitted my Rog Strix g16, but I understand it's just a 20l bag and the laptop it's huge compared to other 16"

• Max EDC (26L): The Looks incredible, by far the better looking one and the duffel pocket can be really usefull. It's heavy heavy tho, Fit my super heavy laptop but back may hurt at the end of the day if I have to walk a lot.

• Osprey Nebula 32: Best value for the dollar BY FAR, If I was younger and this is the only bag I could get I would be perfectly fine. It's lights, can carry a lot, organization it's great and it's also comfortable.

Second the max edc. In sports fellowship and using it as my bag for everything that’s not in my team bag. So laptop, 2 ipads, portable US, stethoscope, electronics accessories, all my snacks lol, and then the protein shakes / monsters I snag from the cafeteria lol

The Osprey Comet is very similar to the nebula. I had a warranty replacement recently and went with the Nebula instead of the Comet, kind of wish I stuck with the comet. I find the cinch straps at the top of the Nebula to workaround.

That being said, my Tok Bihn Synik 26 is my favorite bag. I love all the pockets. I think one big thing to consider is are you a pocket person or do you prefer to use pouches? That can make a big difference in figuring out which bag works for you.

Its been about 10 years since then and the backpack is worn and rugged from daily use for 10 years. Its my everything backpack, I jokingly call it my man purse. Laptop sleeve, spacious section you can use for books, lunch, clothes, ect. Smaller third pouch for smaller things and a front pouch for EDC things. I've used it for classes, took it to work every day, packed it full of clothes for travel, went to three different countries with it. got it soaking wet, it even cushioned my fall off my longboard with my laptop in it and my laptop was fine.

I just recently retired it and got the newest model because the top zipper slipped out and I figured it was time to get a new one.

Take a look at the bags at Swiss Gear Backpacks. A good one can be had for under 100. They are very durable, well made, and there are a lot of different options to fit your needs. I have used one as my work backpack for over 10 years and it's still holding up great. I think for the price they are hard to beat.

If you want the one bag to buy for life and do it all, recommend GoRuck GR1. It’s amazingly comfortable and durable. Internally not well organized but very modular. In all black, the base model can pass as professional, but it does have MOLLE straps on the outside that look a bit tactical.

I do wish I got a “slick” model or waxed canvas that lacks the external straps. While it ruins some of the utility of the bag, it looks better on the back while walking around a hospital.

Lately, I’ve been using the Aer City Pack Pro 2. It’s a bit more organized and looks a touch more professional. It gets a lot of compliments if you care about that stuff (I’m the opposite — I’m a large bald white guy and REALLY don’t want people to think I’m a gun lover or some MAGA idiot, so I only care for that reason but not to peacock, so to speak). Internal organization is way better and the bag is plenty large and clamshell also.

This sub loves the Civic Panel Loader. It looks amazing and I’ve toyed with it. Non-fanatic reviews say the padding on the straps is not very comfortable. It’s all over Facebook Marketplace if you want a second hand one.

I’ve been using an Alpha One Niner Evade 1.0 (I think) for commuting etc. I think it’s a good fit. A front panel with plenty of organization for EDC. A well padded laptop compartment. A good sized interior for “stuff.” Looks reasonably professional (all black, not covered in straps), carries well, mine has been durable so far. It wouldn’t be my “one bag” option for travel but for EDC of a laptop and some other stuff it’s great.

I have all my medical gear in a sling that I pack within a backpack. Started with an osprey synchro 20L because I'd run into work but it doesn't have a laptop sleeve and the internal frame is a bit much for work use. These days I'm currently using a rework gear toshi backpack V2 25L which is discreet, flexible, and comfortable. Prior to that it was a sympl commuter V2 20L which has an amazing built in tech caddy (for pens, power banks, ID, charger and cable, medicines) but ultimately was a bit small for my needs and not as comfortable as the toshi. If I were to start again I'd consider the able carry EDC 26L because of the front 'duffel like' pocket which looks perfect for a sling loaded with medical gear and leaves the rest of the bag available for other things with a good laptop compartment and clever internal organisation.

edit: and if you want something smaller I’d check out the Osprey daylite plus. It’s around 20l but I find it a small 20l.

Osprey Daylite Plus hits that 20L mark and the laptop sleeve actually works. I've seen them on sale under fifty

Personally I like the look of the Bellroy Transit series for professionals. Various sizes to fit your needs and the color options are subdued and the bag in no way says you're hitting the trails after work, if you're not wanting to give off those vibes.

I work with SHONATI, a luggage and bags retailer. Since your medical kit only comes along on some days, I’d try any shortlisted bag with two loads: your normal laptop setup, then the full equipment kit. Check whether it still carries comfortably and whether you can remove the MacBook without unpacking the equipment.

For laptop protection, look at the bottom of the sleeve as well as the padding: does it stop above the bag’s base, or does the laptop sit directly on the bottom? If you use a separate sleeve, test the fit with that on.

Chuyen Tactical CT21 is wonderful. I have black with an orange interior in 1000D nylon and it comfortably carries a full size mac, a 12.9” iPad, notebooks, pens, EDC like multitools and cables, etc.

it’s mostly interior compartments so it’s easy to organize, and it’s stealthy (it doesn’t look lIke much).
