Willow

I took my willow pack frame on its first visit to the woods. Some misadventure, but overall a fun trip.

Last year I attempted the Little Bald Hills trail in the Smith River Recreation Area. I made it to the backpacking camp site to find the water source that I read about online was no more. So I hiked back down, about 10 miles that day straight up and straight down the mountain. I wanted to redeem myself because the trail/camp is really nifty, and I wanted to hike around on the top. So I decided to try to pack in some water, spoiler alert, this did not go well. My gear is cobbled together, and not terribly lightweight so I was already at a disadvantage there. So I start up the trail, it’s difficult, I can’t catch my breath, full body sweats and I’m taking breaks every 100 feet. I’ve had some health issues this year, and it didn’t occur to me that I might not be at the same ability level as last year. I made it 25% of the trail to the camp, and I just had to turn back. I was completely spent, and I wasn’t even to the really steep part yet. When I got back to the parking area I said out loud “oh thank GOB. I decided to pivot and find some nearby dispersed camping. Found a sweet spot, up a steep hill of course, I’m always doing that. I set up camp, and dropped like a stone. The next day I hiked around and foraged some huckleberries! They go really well with meat stick. The pack worked very well, I need to make some adjustments, the top of the pack needs to be closer to my body, but it performs really well, I’m super happy with it. Here’s to flexibility and huckleberries! Ps: if anyone has any suggestions for cutting weight on a zero budget I’d love to hear about it.

$0 budget to reduce pack weight is a hard one. I dable in the ultralight neighborhood (and you've reminded me that I want to try packing like that, minus the frame) and I have some thoughts. I'm going to post my budget UL lighter pack so I can reference it https://lighterpack.com/r/yh3kic • For starters, you're probably just taking extra stuff. Compare how much you're taking to my lighterpack, that's all you need. The lightest item is the one you don't take. The heaviest item is the one you don't need. Ppl • Another cheap UL thought process, you may be able to replace some heavy gear with literal trash. You seem to have picked up on the first tip which is that pretty much any disposable 1L bottle will be lighter than most "sports" bottles. All the trendy kids use the smart water bottles but it's whatever... Oh that reminds me you could hang your water bottles from your shoulder straps, which helps with weight distribution: https://www.ula-equipment.com/product/water-bottle-holders/ watch the video further down the page. • similarly there are a ton to diy ultralight camp sandal ideas that basically use free junk as the sole. Maybe try using an old insole • To save weight you could go stoveless. I doubt you're in a place where you can have open fires, but You can just take ready to eat foods like salami, cheese, crackers, tortilla, pita, PB&J... One of my favorites is pepperoni and cheese stick on a pita. You can also cold soak in something like a peanut butter jar, or a takeout soup container. Honestly a lot of cold soaked food is pretty gross, but there are some decent overnight oats type recipes that are OK, I also like the instant mashed potatoes. One good recipe is Mix together 1 pouch of instant mashed potatoes, and one of the smaller pouches of tuna or chicken, then add one packet of mustard, and 1 packed of mayo, and it tastes like you're at a potluck and you've mixed the potatoe salad and tuna salad together (or just use BBQ sauce instead, that's what I prefer) • your tent is probably your heaviest item, and I suspect you don't want to replace it with a tarp, or you already would have. Could you modify your tent for fast fly setup? Some tents that weren't designed for it can still be modified for it. Then you could only take the poles and fly, and your existing ground sheet. You could make a bugnet from tule look to the lighterpack for inspiration. If you reduce the bulk of your tent, and can fit it inside your pack that will also help with weight distribution. • cheap sleeping bags are heavy, this time of year you may still be able to get away with a fleece blanket or 2. That's about all I've got for little to no budget, but UL doesn't have to be super expensive. Though budget UL does take some DIY and requires some concessions.

    u/Niall0h:哇,谢谢所有这些提示!

Wow thank you for all these tips! I have a big Agnes tent and sleeping bag, been toying with leaving the rainfly and rigging the tarp over, but I feel insecure about it. Several years ago when I was stronger, I hiked with a commercial pack and two tarps, one for a hammock and one for an a frame. Best sleep of my entire life. I could forgo the waterproof bag I pack everything in, but I like to put my food and stuff in there as a bear bag. I’ll keep whittling it down, thank you for all your suggestions!

Speaking of whittling, your frame looks quite strong; maybe you could literally whittle some grams away by thinning out that wooden frame.

Perhaps, it’s definitely smaller wood than my original frame made of juniper. It’s also not dry yet, I figure it’ll lighten up after awhile. That’s a rad suggestion!

    u/CheapEbb2083:你能弄到竹子吗?

Do you have access to bamboo? I suspect swapping out your frame for a bamboo one could save a lot of weight. It's incredibly strong and young narrow diameter bamboo should be sufficient I'd think.

That’s a great suggestion, there’s gotta be some bamboo around here somewhere.

yeah I like that idea more than my whittling idea.
