65l too big for 1 month trip?

主帖

Doing a 1 month trip backpacking around Asia, what are thoughts on a 65l? Is it just too big for convenience?? My gut is telling me go 50-55 but I feel like I will run out of room (and for excess bits I pick up along the trip).

for "normal" urban/semi-urban travel via hostels/hotels/guesthouses and using public transport you can easily get by with a 40L carry-on sized backpack that is specifically designed for travel (as opposed to hiking/camping) and a small personal item.

Yeah I will be doing some overnight hikes in between hostels, so leaning more towards slightly more spare room.

I think if you’re actively considering 65L you’re not ready for 40L (mentally or in terms of gear on hand)

I’ve travelled for long-term with a 40L and a daypack but these were mostly warmer climates. I’ve recently travelled to a cooler country where I need more layers and the 40L is struggling big time.

I'm doing 3 months in SE Asia with a 38 liter and a sling, some people so it with sub 30L bags but that takes sacrifices.

You’ll likely be asked to check a 65L pack more often than not, which can be a pain. Check in increases the likelihood of your bag being lost or damaged, alongside the general inconvenience of having to wait at the carousel. 45L guarantees you’ll be able to carry on.

As far as actually carrying them around I don’t think a 65L pack is that cumbersome tbh.

I sleep with a synthetic 20 deg quilt. The weight difference isn’t my main issue, it just takes up way more space than a down bag. I have 55L Durston Kakwa & a 70L Hyperlite Southwest. I use the 55L for short trips & three 70L for longer trips or if I have more gear/dogs.

Depends entirely on your travel style, destinations, what you're doing once you arrive, time of year, etc. That said, for "normal" urban/semi-urban travel via hostels/hotels/guesthouses and using public transport you can easily get by with a 40L carry-on sized backpack that is specifically designed for travel (as opposed to hiking/camping) and a small personal item. Good luck with your research and have fun no matter what you decide. Happy travels.

如果你有兴趣看看你的选择,我建议去r/onebag和r/solotravel研究一下。

You could almost assuredly do it with a smaller pack. Depending on where you are going and what seasons, you could probably do it with a way smaller pack. I'm doing 3 months in SE Asia with a 38 liter and a sling, some people so it with sub 30L bags but that takes sacrifices. I value traveling light and never checking a bag more than extra clothes. If need be , I'll pick up a cheap knockoff duffel at the end of my trip for souvenirs. If you are interested in looking at your options I'd suggest r/onebag and r/solotravel for research.

Depends on how much you’ll be flying tbh. You’ll likely be asked to check a 65L pack more often than not, which can be a pain. Check in increases the likelihood of your bag being lost or damaged, alongside the general inconvenience of having to wait at the carousel. 45L guarantees you’ll be able to carry on. For me that outweighed the convenience of carrying marginally more clothing and doing laundry slightly less frequently. Might be a different calculus for you though. As far as actually carrying them around I don’t think a 65L pack is that cumbersome tbh.
