Te Araroa South Island nobo shakedown. Early November

I'm back and forth on the sleeping pad. It's a delticate one with less R value than I typically use, but 8.5ozs! I've also got a ~19oz long wide xlite R 4.5, a ~14oz nemo switchback that I could take. It's a decision between comfort (xlite), weight (nemo tensor elite), and durability (nemo switchback).
Also interested to hear people's thoughts on the size of the pack. It's 43L inside with another 6-8L in external pockets. Do you think that will be enough volume for this kit + 8 days of food (max, likely less)?定位到正文 ↓u/Hggangsta01
I used the same pack, the 17" version and it's plenty big enough. I carried an xlite and it was good enough.
In answer to your sleeping pad question, I'd take the lightest option you have.
Here in NZ we have lots of huts, and doing the TA you will stay in lots of them. The huts have mattresses so you won't use your sleeping pad on those days - so you may as well save the weight when you aren't going to use it every day!

I carried an xlite and it was good enough. Lots of people use foam pads and are fine.

Personally I’d hike in shorts, keep the Alpha pants (so cosy and doesn’t hold onto water which you will face a lot) then either keep the rain pants or the wind pants + rain skirt. NZ is quite humid so airflow really helps with comfort.

I count four pairs of pants (rain, wind, alpha, general). Your gear is pretty optimised and this is more of a comfort tradeoff but in NZ many people (including myself) hike mostly in shorts. Ticks are not very common and Lyme disease isn’t a risk so the only reason I bring pants is for sandflies but they’re only a concern when you’re stationary. Personally I’d hike in shorts, keep the Alpha pants (so cosy and doesn’t hold onto water which you will face a lot) then either keep the rain pants or the wind pants + rain skirt.

Ha! You're right I do have 4 pairs of pants. Yeah I've been back and forth on the pants vs shorts thing. I stuck pants in this list because of the early season start but I definitely prefer hiking in shorts. Same with rain skirt vs rain pants. I definitely prefer the skirt for ease of on/off and ventilation. But if it's cold enough rain pants are nicer imo. Luckily I've got some family in NZ so I can store stuff with them and ask them to send it if I need it. I like the shorts, alpha, wind pants and rain skirt combo you suggest.

Similar kit. I hiked a few years ago, albeit SOBO starting Nov 19th. From what I gathered from the early NOBO hikers I met, they were wet a lot. Your gear kit looks solid. There are huts everywhere, you'll most likely adjust your mileage to stay in the huts. Starting as early as you will, you won't have to fight with the SOBOs for a spot. Longest stretch was the Richmond Range where we carried 7 days of food, but it is totally doable in 5 if weather permits, but that's at the end of your trip. I used the same pack, the 17" version and it's plenty big enough. I carried an xlite and it was good enough. Lots of people use foam pads and are fine.
